A personal retreat is an opportunity to step away from the busyness of daily life and spend intentional time in quiet reflection, prayer, and rest. Mount Saint Francis Center for Spirituality offers a peaceful setting with nature trails, quiet spaces, and prayer areas that can help support this time of renewal.
1. Set Your Intention
Before arriving, take a few moments to think about why you would like to make a retreat. Your intention might be to rest, pray, reflect on life decisions, reconnect with God, or simply spend time in quiet. Having a simple purpose can help guide your day.
2. Choose Your Retreat Time
Decide how long you would like your personal retreat to be. Some people come for a few hours, while others may spend a full day or more. Try to choose a time when you can be free from interruptions and responsibilities.
3. Prepare for Your Time
Bring items that may help you reflect and relax, such as a journal or notebook, a favorite book or spiritual reading, comfortable walking shoes, a Bible or inspirational reading, art supplies, and water or a simple meal if needed. Keep things simple so your focus can remain on reflection and quiet.
4. Spend Time in Quiet Spaces
Mount Saint Francis offers several places where you can spend quiet time, such as the chapel or prayer areas, walking the nature trails, sitting by the lake, or quiet outdoor spaces around the grounds. Allow yourself time to slow down and simply be present. Also available for longer stay are Loftus House and our Hermitage.
5. Reflect and Journal
You may wish to spend some time writing about your thoughts, feelings, or insights. Helpful questions might include: What has been meaningful in my life recently? What challenges or concerns am I carrying? What am I grateful for? What might God be inviting me to notice?
6. Take Time for Walking and Rest
A retreat is not only about thinking and writing. Walking the grounds, enjoying the quiet, and resting are also important parts of the experience. Nature can help bring clarity and peace.
